New tree-ring evidence for the Late Glacial period from the northern pre-Alps in eastern Switzerland

2018

Abstract The rate and magnitude of temperature variability at the transition from the Last Glacial Maximum into the early Holocene represents a natural analog to current and predicted climate change. A limited number of high-resolution proxy archives, however, challenges our understanding of environmental conditions during this period. Here, we present combined dendrochronological and radiocarbon evidence from 253 newly discovered subfossil pine stumps from Zurich, Switzerland. The individual trees reveal ages of 41–506 years and were growing between the Allerod and Preboreal (∼13′900–11′300 cal BP). Together with previously collected pines from this region, this world's best preserved Late…

Morphological variations of crossed-lamellar ultrastructures of Glycymeris bimaculata (Bivalvia) serve as a marine temperature proxy

2020

Abstract Bivalve shells are among the most promising archives for high-resolution seawater temperature reconstructions. However, despite major research advances in bivalve sclerochronology over the past decades, estimating water temperature from shells remains a challenging task. This is largely because the most frequently used and widely accepted temperature proxy in bivalves, i.e., the shell oxygen isotope (δ18Oshell) value, also requires knowledge of changes in δ18O of the water (δ18Owater) in which the bivalve lived, which is rarely available for ancient environments. According to a few recent studies, the size and shape of individual biomineral units (BMUs) of the shell ultrastructure …

Pliocene sapropels in the northern Adriatic area: chronology and paleoenvironmental significance

1997

Abstract A detailed stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental study was carried out ona marine section from the Marecchia Valley in the Northern Apennines. The section consists predominantly of deep-water hemipelagic clays intercalated with 15 thick, laminated sapropels (M1–M15). Based on biostratigraphic (calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera) and magnetostratigraphic results, the Marecchia Valley section is interpreted as being middle to late Pliocene in age, extending from the upper part of the Gauss Chron to the lower part of the Matuyama Chron. The high resolution stratigraphy allows us to correlate, for the first time, these northern Italian sapropels with sapropels previous…

Final Report of the Oceanographic Survey NextData201. Project NEXTDATA WP-1.5 : Paleoclimatic Data from Marine Sediments

2013

The retrieval of series of proxy data on the past climate will serve to acquire a deeper understanding of the climate system and a more accurate prediction of its future development, as a priority task for the scientific community. In particular, the analysis of climate data of the past is an essential tool for studying the dynamics of the earth's climatic system in conditions different from present ones, and irreplaceable for testing the validity of medium- and long-term forecasting models. The determination of the influence of anthropogenic impacts on the planet’s environment is predicated on a clear understanding of the natural ways in which the earth's climate responds to the complex se…
